When my grandmother fell ill, we were deeply concerned—not just for her health, but about finding someone she would trust. She was strong-willed and fiercely independent, never one to easily accept help, especially in vulnerable moments. And rightfully so—she was the first Black woman to become Captain of the women’s prison here in North Carolina.

As the only grandson still living nearby, I had become her go-to-lifting her when she fell, helping when no one else could. I loved her dearly; she raised me after my mother passed away from breast cancer when I was just four. But helping her came with challenges, especially when it came to personal care. She didn’t want anyone else in her space.

Mrs. Shauna. She was our neighbor—down-to-earth, professional, and full of heart. From day one, she approached my grandmother with patience, compassion, and respect. That first consultation didn’t go well. My grandmother shamed me in front of her instead of focusing on the help being offered. But Mrs. Shauna didn’t flinch. She told me, “This won’t be easy, but it’s possible.” And she meant it.

By the second visit, something shifted. Mrs. Shauna had already started building trust with not just my grandmother, but with our whole family. She has a way of managing every space—connecting with patients, being transparent with families, and coordinating seamlessly with other caregivers.

What impressed us most was how deeply she cared. She didn’t just treat wounds—she treated people. She listened to my grandmother’s stories, respected her pride, and showed up in a way no one else could. And let me be clear—my grandmother didn’t make it easy. One day, while Shauna was tending to her painful wounds, my grandmother grabbed her from behind the neck. But Mrs. Shauna didn’t panic—she froze, waited, and calmly told my grandmother, “Take your time. You let me know when you’re ready.” That moment showed me everything I needed to know: this wasn’t just care, it was honor.

Thanks to Mrs. Shauna, my grandmother spent her final months in comfort, dignity, and peace. She wasn’t just cared for—she was respected and treated like the Queen and Captain she was. We will always be grateful.
