When my grandmother fell ill, we were deeply concerned—not just for her health, but about finding someone she would trust. She was strong-willed and fiercely independent, never one to easily accept help, especially in vulnerable moments. And rightfully so—she was the first Black woman to become Captain of the women’s prison here in North Carolina.
As the only grandson still living nearby, I had become her go-to-lifting her when she fell, helping when no one else could. I loved her dearly; she raised me after my mother passed away from breast cancer when I was just four. But helping her came with challenges, especially when it came to personal care. She didn’t want anyone else in her space.

She listened to my grandmother’s stories, respected her pride, and showed up in a way no one else could. And let me be clear—my grandmother didn’t make it easy. One day, while Shauna was tending to her painful wounds, my grandmother grabbed her from behind the neck. But Mrs. Shauna didn’t panic—she froze, waited, and calmly told my grandmother, “Take your time. You let me know when you’re ready.” That moment showed me everything I needed to know: this wasn’t just care, it was honor.
Thanks to Mrs. Shauna, my grandmother spent her final months in comfort, dignity, and peace. She wasn’t just cared for—she was respected and treated like the Queen and Captain she was. We will always be grateful.

I was referred to Shauna by a close family friend in 2023, shortly after my father passed away. My dad had been my mother’s primary caregiver, and after his death, trying to coordinate care for my mother from Atlanta felt overwhelming.
Shauna came to meet with my mother and me, but my mother wasn’t ready to accept help at the time and quickly ended the visit. Just two weeks later, my mother suffered a serious fall. I searched everywhere, placed her name on multiple waiting lists, and watched the move-out date draw closer with no solution in sight. Then one of my mother’s friends told me about a nurse who might have room for her temporarily while we figured things out. To my surprise, that nurse was Shauna.
That same day, Shauna invited us into her home. We met her husband, children, and mother, and after spending time there, my mother simply said, “This is my home.”
In an incredible twist of fate, we discovered the day before my mother’s move that she and Shauna’s grandmother, Pearline Williams, had been childhood friends. It felt as though God had been orchestrating this journey all along.
Today, my mother, Delores White, has been part of Shauna’s family for nearly three years. During that time, they have given her not only exceptional care but also purpose, joy, dignity, and a true sense of belonging. They have embraced her as one of their own, and for that, our family will be forever grateful.

My wife and I built our home just two doors down from Shauna and her family in 2017. When we first met Shauna and Thomas, they immediately felt like family. Shauna was expecting their second son at the time, and we loved that they had chosen the strong biblical names Micah and Roman for their boys.
Although she was very pregnant when we met, Shauna always took the time to check on my wife and me. When we later learned she was a registered nurse, her caring and compassionate nature made perfect sense.
A few years later, my wife and I made the difficult decision to relocate my twin aunts, both retired nurses, from Atlanta to North Carolina. They had never married or had children, and we wanted them closer to family as they entered a new stage of life. Without hesitation, my wife said, “We need to call Shauna.”
The very next day, Shauna took the time to discuss our situation in detail. She carefully explained the different senior living and care options available and recommended what she believed would best meet my aunts’ needs.
About six months later, we moved them into an independent living community with supportive services, where they flourished. As time passed, however, we began noticing signs of confusion and knew they needed additional support.
Once again, Shauna was there for us. She met with our family at my aunts’ apartment, completed an assessment, and recommended hospice services to provide the additional oversight, comfort, and support they needed alongside their existing care.
One of my aunts eventually declined peacefully and went home to be with the Lord. After her passing, we relocated my surviving aunt closer to my sister in South Carolina, where she continues to thrive during her golden years.
Throughout every stage of this journey, Shauna was a trusted advisor, a compassionate nurse, and a source of comfort for our entire family. Her knowledge, honesty, and genuine concern helped us make some of the most difficult decisions we have ever faced.
